Passover

When I was contacted by a press representative asking me if I'd like to review a copy of Mindy Avra Portnoy's new book A Tale of Two Seders I gladly accepted thinking it would be about the ways different families conduct Passover Seders. Boy was I wrong.

Pesach is here and boy is this special holiday rich in Jewish tradition and storytelling...We dig it and my kids can't get enough of Moses, especially hearing about him leading the Israelites out of Egypt by escaping through the Red Sea that's miraculously split by God.

The Jewish festival Pesach (Passover) began for us last night which means it's Seder time folks! A Seder is a very special meal which is accompanied by the reading of the Haggadah, the story of Passover. And, as those of you who celebrate Passover or have been to a family Seder know, these meals last hours meaning very squirmy kids. Of course kids play a huge role in the success of a Seder, but one worries if all the symbolism and customs are lost on the littlest participants?

Sometimes it can be really hard to keep kosher for Passover with so many temptations surrounding you. And nobody knows it better than Aaron, a Jewish boy and main character of Mindy Avra Portnoy's children's book Matzah Ball: A Passover Story.

Today we prepare. The kids are on Spring Break. The husband is home from work. In a few hours our house will smell heavenly and we'll be knee deep in matzah meal. But most importantly, we'll be tackling the hundreds of tasks we need to complete before the big seder together, as a family.
