First day jitters? Read them Mike Thaler's "Teacher From the Black Lagoon"
"Teacher From the Black Lagoon" is the Mike Thaler book that began his very funny series of "Black Lagoon" books. This is the book I always read my students on the first day of school. My 8 year old son really enjoys reading the book prior to his own first day of school. It addresses the anxiety and uncertainty a child begins to feel as the first day of school quickly jogs into existence just about the time summer beings to take steps backwards into the distance. That anxiety over the new teacher. Will she be great, will she torture us to no end? The book takes you on the journey of a boy on his first day of school. A day which seems to be a total nightmare as students fall victim to "Ms. Green" who appears to be every kid's worst dream. Readers will enjoy the comical, literal way Ms. Green plucks off her class one by one...but not all is as it seems. I realize this book might be a little late for those folks out there who've already survived the first day of school however, it's a truly silly book that will getting kids psyched about reading and glad to be back in school. If your kid enjoys this book don't be surprised if he begs to read more from the "Black Lagoon" series. Our favorites include "Librarian From the Black Lagoon"
, "Substitute Teacher From the Black Lagoon"
and "The Dentist From the Black Lagoon"
. These books have a way of really getting kids to read to the point where they won't rest until they've read every "Black Lagoon" book in the series. A fun, fun read!
