Green your kid's lunch with this Handmade Cloth Napkins tutorial.

As mentioned in a previous OH Guide it's our goal this year to move our son's packed school lunch towards zero waste, something we started last year and have received a lot of satisfaction from doing. Not to mention the bonus karma. In order to accomplish this goal he'll begin taking reusable cloth napkins as opposed to paper napkins.

Now, I could've gone about this in two ways. I could've bought five cloth napkins from Target spending close to $15 bucks or so on something my son really didn't care much for, thus risking the chance that one or two napkins might not ever make it home. Or I could go ahead and sew up a few using a fabric I knew he already thought was pretty cool...yes, apparently when they reach the age of "almost 9" they start telling you what's cool. Which sadly labels many things I'd think of as being "cool" like oh, say, Converse All-Stars as no longer "cool." What does he know..he's only almost 9 years old.

Using some leftover fabric (black with blazing skulls) from a superhero cape I made for him and this awesome "Handmade Cloth Napkins" tutorial courtesy of Chara Michele I made a set of six (one for each day of school and an extra just in case)9'x 10' fabric napkins. The tutorial was so easy to follow taking me about 45 minutes to complete all six. And because I had some leftover pretty pink, sunny day type fabric that I used for my daughter's cape I made her a set of four. Two for play tea parties and two for her parent and me class. When I bestowed the cloth gifts upon my children last night they happily began wiping fake crumbs from their faces as well as each others. And my son exclaimed "I can't wait to use my cool skull napkins on Monday!" And I just hope the skulls napkins remain cool even after his friends get a load of them. If not I might be off to Target after all.

Who knows, this tutorial was so quick and easy I might get ambitious and stitch up a ton of these fancy homemade napkins from Purl Bee. We can stop using paper napkins for meals and instead gussy up the table with something a little more special.
