"Latkes, Latkes Good to Eat" a Chanukah story fun to read
Reading like a traditional Yiddish folk tale "Latkes, Latkes Good to Eat" by Naomi Howland is a fun holiday book with a nice message full of suprises. It's the first night of Hanukkah and kind-hearted Sadie and her four mischievous younger brothers are on their own while their mother is away helping their Aunt Rose with her new baby. Faced with a house full of cold, hungry and grumpy siblings Sadie has no choice but to venture out into the freezing cold wilderness to search for some firewood. There she has an unusual encounter with a frail old woman. In return for helping the mysterious woman by giving her all the firewood she'd collected Sadie is rewarded for her kindness when the lady gives her a magical frying pan. Warned of it's powers Sadie rushes home to try out the pan. Surrounded by her skeptical brothers she sets to work whispering the secret words. What happens next is a crazy chain of events culminating in the largest Hanukkah party Sadie's village has ever seen. Beautiful illustrations depicting Sadie's shtetl village during wintertime help drive the story's whimsical plot. The book also contains a recipe for Sadie's special latkes and a quick section on Hanukkah's origins. The story is sprinkled with Hanukkah symbols and traditions and is sure to have your kids shouting "A great miracle happened here" by the end of the book.
