OH Repost: Turn milk containers into spooky ghost luminaries

There's something special about the glow of luminaries lined up in a perfect row on someone's front walkway lighting the path for teeny trick-or-treaters and inviting them over for a goody. I'm in love with this spirit jug tutorial from Family Fun.

Being a 2-gallon a week milk chugging family we're going to have one flashy ghost party happening in our front yard this Halloween. The project is super-easy and fast. My family finished four ghosts in less than 20 minutes. I did do a couple of things different from the original how-to. I decided against using black marker to draw the faces on the jugs and instead had my kids cut out shapes from black construction paper which we then sealed onto the milk jugs with glossy Mod Podge. I did this because my kids haven't mastered marker wielding quite yet and I'm working with my 3 year old daughter on scissor handling and cutting skills. I'm using 2 LED tea light candles per ghost and not the holiday lights because I don't have an outdoor outlet and I love the way the fake tea lights fake flicker. Can you guess which ghost is mine?

It's a simple family project that scores on many levels from the satisfaction of crafting a unique Halloween decoration with the kids to recycling to saving major bucks from being wasted on store-bought mass produced flare.

Update:

Our ghost luminaries were a HUGE hit last Halloween and we received tons of compliments on our lit pathway.

I've just pulled out last year's ghost luminaries and found them to be in fair shape. We will need to reapply Mod Podge to a few ghost faces but for the most part they've kept quite well and even survived a major move!

Still one of my favorite kid-friendly Halloween how-tos!
