Recycling a 2 liter bottle into a wormery
As you may know we've been thinking a lot about composting in our household lately. Due to space issues we've narrowed down our choice to buliding our own double-bin which should produce a nice rich humus and juicy compost tea for our vegetable garden. We'll see, fingers crossed.
So, I figured before we get all wormy up in here I'd really like my kids to know what this whole worms being nature's recyclers idea is all about. This wormery from soda bottle how-to from Documenting an Unschooled Life is just the trick. And what a double-shot of wisdom it is. Not only will my kids witness vermicomposting in action but they themselves are acting as a smart recycler repurposing a 2-liter bottle into their very own worm observation container. The project proved to be a blast down to the digging of two ginormous holes in our backyard in order to capture a few squiggly tenants; an event that exposed my 9 year old son's mad worm-hunting skills. Quite impressive. In a few weeks we'll release the worms back into nature and I'm thinking we'll clean out our 2-liters and let some microbes show us how they work the rot.
