Robert Sabuda's eye-popping "America the Beautiful: A Pop-up Book"

If you've never read one of Robert Sabuda's masterpiece pop-up books with a child then you've truly never experienced the art of paper pop-up books. He is the master of pop-up. Each page of every book is a work of art detailed and magnificently larger than life. Simply turning the page and watching it open, completely unfolding to reveal a glorious scene of cut paper and 3D goodness is nothing short of magical. His pop-up books have been a favorite of our family since our 8 year old son was four and only allowed to "look but not touch" Mr. Sabuda's works of art.

"America the Beautiful: A Pop-up Book" is no exception. The book manages to get me a bit teary-eyed each time I read it with my children. Maybe it's because Sabuda flawlessly combines the patriotic lyrics of "America the Beautiful" with paper landscapes depicting some of America's most important monuments and beautiful places. I also like the way he's added the extra verses to Katharine Lee Bates's song, the ones they never teach us in school, into a little pop-up book on the last page of the full-size book which is also quite detailed even given it's small size. Each time I reach the end of the book I can't help but feel a little more proud to be American...I'll take what I can get these days. "America the Beautiful: A Pop-up Book" is just the right book to share with your family and get them all excited about America's big day coming up this Friday!
