Our son was Geffen Playhouse's "Kid Reporter" for a day
We love the Geffen Playhouse and their awesome family theater series Saturday Scene. Offering a high quality theater experience before nap time this series teams the playhouse up with some very impressive performing arts entertainers. And now we have even more reason to love them, as if we needed another reason.
Not quite a month ago my son was chosen by the educational department of the Geffen Playhouse to be their Kid Reporter for their upcoming Saturday Scene's installment which was Will & Company's performance of Pinocchio. Any parents can enter their kids age 6 and up to become the "Kid Reporter." My son was chosen when I simply submitted an email containing the information mentioned on the Kid Reporter page. Within an hour I had a response from a representative asking if he'd like to be their next "Kid Reporter" for a performance happening that very Saturday. I'm not sure if it was pure luck that he was chosen so quickly or if the playhouse hasn't had much response to the program which is a shame because the Kid Reporter program is truly an awesome experience for kids.
Upon our arrival at the theater our son was met at the door by a very welcoming and enthusiastic coordinator who, after introducing herself,
proceeded to handed my son all sorts of goodies. For being their "Kid Reporter' he was given a Saturday Scene t-shirt, a "Kid Reporter Press Pass" and four tickets to that day's performance. She then took his photo which we were told would be placed in an upcoming play bill. We were shuffled the theater where my son was given the opportunity to interview the cast of Will & Company. The entire cast of that day's performance sat with my son for the interview. They were so kind and patient. He was told he could ask whatever he wanted and that the company just received brand new masks which they were premiering on that day's performance. The interview went something like this:
S: Is acting fun?
Actors: Yes, it is fun but tiring sometimes. It's hard work but we all love what we do.
S: Is it easy?
Actors: It can be challenging. For instance, some people play multiple characters and we have to run around and change costumes. But we always try and help each other out.
S: How many shows have you done?
Actors: As a company, we have done many, many shows, in this theater and in other places.
S: What kind of school to you have to go to to learn how to be an actor?
Actors: We all went to different kinds of colleges all over the world. And after that, we're always taking more classes and constantly trying to improve. There are lots of ways you can learn to be a better actor.
We were rather impressed with the quickness and quality of our son's questions. We were told after the interview that our son's interview would be printed along with his photo in an upcoming playbill. How awesome is that? Then, to top off what had already been an amazing experience, our son was announced as their special "Kid Reporter" for the day during the pre-show announcements! My son was so blown away by that. Here he was, settled into his theater seat among tons of kids and he was the one kid who got to stand up and have his name mentioned as someone special!
We were notified that our son's interview and picture will be in the next playbill for Saturday February 14th during a special performance of Brothers Grimm's classic fairy tale Iron John. And we can't wait to add the playbill to our special box of memories.
